FRANK BRALEY - Biography

There are young pianists who play intelligently, young pianists who play poetically. Both  are united in this musician, and that is rare. (Le Monde de la Musique, Paris).

Frank Braley was born in 1968, and began his piano studies at the age of four. Six years later he gave his first concert with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris, Salle Pleyel. In 1986 he decided to devote himself entirely to music and abandoned his studies in science. He entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and three years later he was awarded unanimously first prizes for piano and chamber music. In 1991, at the age of 22, he took part for the first time in an international competition, the Queen Elizabeth Competition of Belgium and won the First Grand Prize. Public and press unanimously recognise him as a pianist with exceptional musical and poetic qualities.

Frank BRALEY toured all over the world: in China with the Orchestre National de France under Charles DUTOIT, Japan and China with the Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse under Michel PLASSON, with the Orchestre Français des Jeunes under Emmanuel KRIVINE in France and Italy, and again Italy with the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto. He gave recitals with the violinist Renaud CAPUçON (Amsterdam, Athens, Birmingham, Firenze, Ferrara, New York, Washington, Paris, Vienna). He also participates in special projects, such as Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas Cycle (La Roque d’Anthéron, Paris, Bordeaux, Nantes, Grenoble, Rome, Tokyo and Brazil).

He played in recital in Paris, Londres, Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Hanovre, Ferrare, in duo with Renaud CAPUÇON in Amsterdam, Athènes, Birmingham, Bruxelles, Rome, Florence, Trieste, New York, Washington, Paris, Vienne… He use to play music chamber with Renaud and Gautier CAPUÇON, Maria Joao PIRES, Augustin DUMAY, Paul MEYER, Gérard CAUSSE, Eric LE SAGE, Emmanuel PAHUD, Mischa MAISKY, Yuri BASHMET…
 
For Harmonia Mundi he has recorded Schubert’s Sonata in A Major D. 959 and Klavierstücke D. 946 (for which he received the Diapason d’Or and has been compared to Claudio Arrau, Alfred Brendel, Radu Lupu, Andras Schiff...), Richard Strauss’ works for piano solo, and Beethoven’s Sonatas Clair de lune op.27 n°2, Appassionata op. 57 and op. 110 (Harmonia Mundi), Gershwin’s complete piano music. For Virgin Classics he has recorded Ravel’s Chamber music with Renaud and Gautier CAPUçON, Saint Saens’ Carnaval des Animaux and Schubert’s Trout. BMG : Poulenc’s Double Concerto with Eric Le Sage (Diapason d’Or). For Naïve DVD Liszt- Debussy-Gershwin (Choc - Monde de la Musique). For Virgin : Schubert’s Trios with Renaud and Gautier Capuçon. FRANK BRALEY - Biographie

Après avoir longtemps hésité entre études scientifiques et musicales, Frank BRALEY décide de quitter l’Université pour se consacrer entièrement à la musique. Au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris il suit les cours de Pascal DEVOYON, Christian IVALDI et Jacques ROUVIER, avant d’y obtenir, à l’unanimité, ses Premiers Prix de Piano et de Musique de Chambre.

En 1991, il se présente pour la première fois à un concours international. C’est l’un des plus prestigieux d’entre eux, le Concours Reine Elisabeth de Belgique, dont il remporte, à vingt-deux ans, le Premier Grand Prix et le Prix du Public. Le public et la presse s’accordent à reconnaître en lui un « grand » lauréat, aux qualités musicales et poétiques exceptionnelles.

Frank BRALEY a effectué des tournées dans le monde entier : en Chine avec l’Orchestre National de France et Charles DUTOIT, au Japon et en Chine avec l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse et Michel PLASSON, en Italie avec l’Orchestre Français des Jeunes et Emmanuel KRIVINE, puis avec l’Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, à Paris et Francfort avec l’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris et John Nelson. Il a joué au Festival de Tanglewood (USA) avec le Boston Symphony dirigé par Hans GRAF et en septembre 2003, il participe à l’inauguration de la nouvelle salle de Carnegie Hall, le Zankel Hall, à New York avec l’Ensemble Intercontemporain.
En récital, il a joué à Paris, Londres, Amsterdam, Bruxelles, Hanovre, Ferrare, et en duo avec Renaud CAPUÇON à Amsterdam, Athènes, Birmingham, Bruxelles, Rome, Florence, Trieste, New York, Washington, Paris, Vienne… En musique de chambre il a également pour partenaires Renaud et Gautier CAPUÇON, Maria Joao PIRES, Augustin DUMAY, Paul MEYER, Gérard CAUSSE, Eric LE SAGE, Emmanuel PAHUD, Mischa MAISKY, Yuri BASHMET…
 
Outre son activité régulière de soliste, il se passionne pour des projets originaux : il participe notamment à une intégrale des Sonates de Beethoven, donnée en 2004 au festival de La Roque d’Anthéron ainsi que dans plusieurs villes françaises, à Rome et au Brésil et en 2005 à Bilbao, Lisbonne et Tokyo.
Sa discographie comprend : chez Harmonia Mundi, la Sonate D.959 et les Klavierstücke D.946 de Schubert, (Diapason d’Or) - qui lui valurent  des comparaisons flatteuses avec Claudio Arrau, Alfred Brendel, Radu Lupu, Andras Schiff -, l’œuvre pour piano de Richard Strauss, enregistrement salué jusque dans les colonnes du New York Times, des sonates de Beethoven (op. 27/2 « Clair de lune », op.57 «Appassionata »  et opus 110), un récital Gershwin et le Double Concerto de Poulenc (BMG – Prix Caecilia en Belgique, Diapason d’Or). Chez Virgin Classics, il a enregistré la musique de chambre de Ravel avec Renaud et Gautier Capuçon, Le Carnaval des Animaux de Saint-Saëns (« Choc »du Monde de la Musique, « Recording of the month » de Gramophone), la Truite de Schubert (Virgin Classics), Chez Naïve : le DVD Liszt- Debussy-Gershwin (Choc - Monde de la Musique). FRANK BRALEY - Biografie

Frank Braley begon op zijn vierde met pianolessen. Zes jaar later gaf hij zijn eerste concert met het Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in de Salle Pleyel in Parijs. In 1986 besloot hij om zich volledig aan de muziek te wijden en gaf zijn wetenschappelijke studie op. Hij schreef zich in aan het Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Parijs, studeerde bij Pascal DEVOYON, Christian IVALDI en Jacques ROUVIER en drie jaar later ontving hij unaniem eerste prijzen voor piano en kamermuziek.

Op de leeftijd van tweeëntwintig jaar nam hij voor het eerst deel aan een internationale wedstrijd - de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd - en won de eerste prijs. Publiek en pers erkenden hem unaniem als een pianist met uitzonderlijke muzikale en poëtische kwaliteiten.

Sindsdien werd Frank Braley regelmatig uitgenodigd naar Japan, Canada, de Verenigde Staten en in heel Europa, om te spelen met orkesten als London Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Orchestre de la Suisse-Romande, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Zürich Kammerorchester, Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de Paris, de orkesten van Bordeaux, Lille, Montpellier en Toulouse, Berlin Rundfunkorchester, Nationaal Orkest van België, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Copenhagen Royal Orchesta, Tokyo Philharmonic, onder leiding van dirigenten als Jean-Claude Casadesus, Charles Dutoit, Hans Graf, Gunther Herbig, Christopher Hogwood, Eliahu Inbal, Marek Janowski, Kurt Masur, Yehudi Menuhin, Antonio Pappano, Michel Plasson, Yutaka Sado, Michael Schönwandt…

Tournees voerden hem over heel de wereld: China, Japan, Frankrijk, Italië, Amsterdam, Athene, Birmingham, Firenze, Ferrara, New York, Washington, Parijs, Wenen, La Roque d'Anthéron, Rome, Brazilië,… In juli 2003 debuteerde Frank Braley bij de Boston Symphony op het Tanglewood Festival en in september 2003 participeerde hij met het Ensemble Intercontemporain aan de opening van de Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall in New York.

Voor Harmonia Mundi nam hij solowerken op van Richard Strauss, Schubert (Diapason d’Or), Beethoven en Gershwin en, voor Virgin Classics, kamermuziek van Ravel en Schubert met onder meer de broers Capuçon.
